What is residencia precaria?
It is provisional authorization from Migraciones while a residency application is processed. While valid, it allows the holder to remain, work and study in Argentina. Renewal keeps the provisional authorization valid; it does not mean temporary or permanent residency has been granted.
Precaria is not temporary residency. Precaria accompanies an open expediente; temporary residency follows a favorable decision.
Travel with valid precaria
Official guidance allows exit and re-entry with an accepted travel document and a valid certificate. If the certificate is expired when leaving, an exit authorization may be required.
Renew a precaria certificate
The Migraciones FAQ allows an online request from 15 days before expiry using the expediente and date of birth. The renewed certificate may be downloadable within the next 10 business days. The online request is processed for people in Argentina.
Temporary residency
This is residency already granted for a defined period, up to three years depending on the criterion. While valid, it qualifies for a temporary DNI. Renewal should be requested within the 60 days before expiry.
Permanent residency
This category is granted for permanent settlement and has no immigration expiry. It qualifies for a permanent DNI. Moving from temporary to permanent residency is not automatic.
From an open expediente to a DNI
- Start the residency application through Ra.D.Ex.
- Keep precaria valid when issued.
- Check the expediente with its number and date of birth.
- Wait for the Migraciones decision.
- Confirm the category and validity granted.
- With valid temporary or permanent residency, apply for the first DNI.

If residency is still pending
Use the official form or read how to check the residency application.
DNI Check can send a daily result in Telegram. It does not decide the category, renew precaria, interpret a decision or track DNI production.
Track residencyDNI Check is an independent service.
After a favorable decision
Read the category and validity in the Migraciones document, then follow the guide to obtain an Argentine DNI. Production and delivery use a RENAPER ID, not the Migraciones expediente.
Common mistakes
- Calling precaria “temporary residency”.
- Trying to obtain a DNI with precaria alone.
- Letting the certificate expire.
- Treating renewal as approval.
- Confusing Migraciones and RENAPER identifiers.
